Christmas in NY
Happy Holidays! I spent my first Christmas away from home without my family this year in NY with my Aussie mates. I wasn’t as sad as I thought I would be. Christmas with my family is always fun and we have these set traditions, so I definitely expected it to be harder to be away. My dad was a chef so the food is always AMAZING and plentiful. Every Christmas we have a big party and invite family and friends. My parents are really close with my best friends so it was always nice that they were part of Christmas celebrations with my family and my mom and dad would feed them till they were in a state of food coma. My dad piles their plate with sausages and steaks and satay chicken. Our backyard was transformed into al fresco dining and relatives would be milling around and catching up with everyone with their wine glasses topped up thanks to my mom. My friends and I would be in the pool and would occasionally threaten to throw someone in. On Christmas Eve, I would sit around the tree with my mom and dad and open presents and eat lots of Lindt chocolate balls and leftover ham from the Christmas party that day. We would all sleep in on Christmas Day, then wake up and go for a swim in our pool. For Christmas brunch, dad would make Lobster Mornay and honey ham…!! DELICIOUS!
So this year, being away from home, I think I must’ve spoken to my parents 6 times over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - with all the time differences, we made sure we spoke on their Christmas Eve and Day, and MY Christmas Eve and Day. I Fed Exed them their presents and on Christmas Eve they opened their package in front of their web cam. Haha!
On Christmas day my house mate cooked eggs then we both went to our own respective Christmas parties. I walked to my Aussie mates place in Union Square - he has a magnificent balcony overlooking Union Square and great views of the Empire State. New York seemed really… dead! My street is usually bustling with people, but it was so peaceful and quiet. When I got to my friends place, I found a bunch of us Aussies in his kitchen eating Vegemite on toast! HA! We rocked it out on Rock Band and by the time we actually prepped out Christmas feast, it was 2pm so we decided to have desert first. I dished up my magnificent desert - half baked brownie, with bitter dark chocolate sauce, crushed pistachios and a sprinkle of sea salt to top it off. For our Christmas lunch/dinner we had a lamb roast stuffed with garlic and fetta, roasted vegetables and green beans. We played Rock Band for like 5 hours non stop, then decided to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at midnight. By the time I got home, it was 4am the next day.
I have to say, it was a pretty great Christmas away from home.
Hope you had a good one!!
